Free Buses, Free Beaches, Free Vibes: What Living in Miami Beach Really Gets You
by
It’s a sunny Sunday afternoon in Miami Beach. I’m walking toward the sand near 67th Street, passing palm trees, bus stops, and a lot of people just living — not rushing. And last night, I found myself stuck in a YouTube rabbit hole, watching clips about politics, promises, and some guy in New York campaigning on... free buses.
Free buses.
Free. Buses.
And it got me thinking:
πWe already have those here.
πAnd that’s just the beginning.
π Free Buses? Yeah, We’ve Got Those.
In Miami Beach, hop on a trolley or local bus line — it’s free. No app needed, no fare card, no "maybe someday" promises. Just get on and ride.
So while some cities are debating whether public transit should be a public right, Miami Beach is just... doing it. Quietly, affordably, and already.
π½ You Know What Else Is Free? Public Bathrooms.
It sounds trivial until you’ve tried to find a restroom in New York City. Spoiler: it’s a mission. Here?
β
Supermarkets are legally required to have public-access restrooms.
β
Parks, bus stops, and popular walking areas often have clean, accessible toilets.
β
You don’t have to buy a $6 bottle of water just to earn the right to pee.
π Pickleball, Outdoor Gyms & Parks — Also Free.
Walk through any Miami Beach neighborhood, and you’ll spot:
-
Free pickleball courts (yup, state-built and maintained)
-
Running tracks and greenways
-
Calisthenics stations and outdoor fitness zones
-
Huge public parks that are actually maintained
Most of these places have zero entry fees. No memberships. No waitlists. Just good old-fashioned public access.
In other words: we live in a city that lets you live well — without charging you for every breath you take.
πΈ Did We Mention... No State Income Tax?
This is the part that really hit me.
How is it that Miami Beach can offer:
β
Free transit
β
Public amenities
β
Clean parks
β
Massive infrastructure
β
World-class beaches
…and still not charge state income tax?
Meanwhile, other places are promising one or two free services while hiking up taxes or asking you to fund the promises.
The point isn’t political. It’s practical.
Miami Beach proves it can be done.
And for those of us lucky enough to live here, we don’t need campaign promises. We just need a pair of sneakers, a paddle, and some SPF.
